Hello, lovelies! This year I’ve decided that I’m going to try to read as many of the nominated books for the 2019 GoodReads Choice Awards (find the voting link here)! I’ve read enough new releases this year that I feel trying to read the ones I haven’t is a more attainable goal than in previous years. So, today I will be sharing all the books I need to read or plan to read. Since I only have five days in this first round (opening round voting is Nov. 5-10), I will be listing those that I wanted to read earlier in the year but didn’t get around to. Let’s start with the first category!
Fiction
Normal People by Sally Rooney
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
There are other books in this category that I’m sure I’ll be interested in but these two are the ones that I have the most excitement toward.
Mystery & Thriller
The Silent Patient by Alex Michealides
I was going to skip this one, but I have The Silent Patient from my aunt so this is a good opportunity to finally read it.
Historical Fiction
I haven’t been able to get through any of the historical fiction I’ve tried to pick up in the last month or so. I will skip this category because I know I won’t finish any of the books, but if I did need to pick on it would be The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo because I’ve heard great things about it.
Fantasy
Of Blood and Bone by Nora Roberts
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty
These are the ones from the list that I already own (or plan to buy) and really want to read. There are a few others I will pick up if I manage to read everything else on the list.
Romance
Honestly, I want to read all of these books. So, I’m going to save this category for last so I have fewer books to choose from with only the finalists left.
Science Fiction
The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders
One Word Kill by Mark Lawrence
The Test by Sylvain Neuvel
To Be Taught if Fortunate by Becky Chambers
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone
I’ve been loving science fiction this year, but there are so many from previous years that I haven’t gotten to read too many newer releases.
Graphic Novels & Comics
Heartstopper Vol. 2 by Alice Oseman
Paper Girls Vol. 5 by Brian K. Vaughn
There are a few others on here, but I’d need to catch up on the series and I’m not that ambitious. I will be finishing other graphic novels that I already own to see if I want to submit them for a write-in vote.
Poetry
Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Mermaid’s Voice Returns in This One by Amanda Lovelace
These are the two from this category that I already own. So if I have time and feel like some poetry, I’ll pick them up.
Debut Novel
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
This is the only one I know anything about and have interest in, but I have a few that I want to submit for a write-in vote.
Young Adult Fiction
Frankly in Love by David Yoon
Internment by Samira Ahmed
These are the two I am most excited about for this category. There are others I will probably pick up if they make it to the next round of voting.
Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction
The Toll by Neal Shusterman
Supernova by Marissa Meyer
Finale by Stephanie Garber
I am going to buy the first later today and the second is being delivered tomorrow. I am excited for all three on this list.
Middle Grade & Children’s
The Strangers by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
The Tyrant’s Tomb by Rick Riordan
There have been so many great middle-grade books this year, it’ll be hard to choose for this one.
There are a few categories that I will not be participating in because I just have no interest in them. They are as follows: Horror, Humor, History & Biography, Science & Technology, Food & Cookbooks, and Picture Books. I just don’t read these categories, so I’m not going to put myself through that.
So, five days to read all these books? Very unlikely. But I will be back in five days to give an update on my progress. This list might change as we make it through the voting rounds because I’m sure some won’t make it and others will need to be added to this list. I’m excited to get started. Let me know below if you’ve read any of these or if you’ll be voting!
Keep on reading lovelies, Amanda.
