I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer to showcase our book blogger love for characters! Each week she’ll supply a topic and you’ll supply the character. Post on whatever day suits you, about characters from whatever media you love (books, movies, K-dramas, television, manga, anime, webtoons, whatever!) and link up on Thursday so you and others can blog hop and share the character love.
This weeks topic is A Mental Case (A totally crazy character or even one who thinks they are because of mental illness…)
Charlie is a great choice for this weeks post! Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow follows Charlie’s story as she struggles with addiction and self-harm. This was a very powerful story that I loved every page of. Check out my review here. Charlie was a girl that I could really relate to. Glasgow gave us a character that was real and raw and shows what it’s really like to struggle with these issues. I think there are not enough characters out there that tell this kind of story in such a real and thought-provoking way. Charlie shows that life is hard, but you do what you need to get through and only you are responsible for your choices.
The first character to pop into my head for this is Aza from Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. Aza has anxiety and OCD and I thought Green portrayed it really well. This was the first character with anxiety that I felt I could actually relate to. I absolutely adore her.
